Duplex stainless steels are a family of stainless steels that contain both austenitic and ferritic microstructures, typically in a 50/50 mix. This unique microstructure provides duplex steels with a combination of properties from both austenitic and ferritic stainless steels, such as improved strength, resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC), and enhanced overall corrosion resistance. Duplex steels are typically alloyed with chromium, nickel, molybdenum, and nitrogen to provide these advantages.

    Advantages of Duplex Stainless Steel:

  • Higher Strength: Duplex steels have higher tensile strength than austenitic stainless steels, reducing the need for heavier sections or thicker materials in structural applications.
  • Superior Corrosion Resistance: Excellent resistance to general corrosion, pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking, especially in chloride environments.
  • Cost-Effective in Certain Applications: Compared to high-nickel alloys, duplex steels often offer a more cost-effective solution while maintaining superior corrosion resistance and strength.
  • Better Weldability than Traditional Austenitic Stainless Steels: Duplex steels are generally easier to weld than ferritic stainless steels, though they do require careful control of heat input to prevent issues like grain growth or phase imbalance.
